In this blog, the social justice issue of gang violence is looked at with detail. One gang in particular is mainly focused in this blog. That would be the MS-13 Gang members.
The media had a grand impact on MS-13 because it both hurt them, and helped them. The media hurt them because information from former or current gang members was leaked. Official authorities could then learn their tactics, their system of hierarchy, and how to identify an MS-13 member to the public. These identification tips include gang signs, tattoos, language, and graffiti. One typical gang sign is the devils horns, which is commonly used in rock concerts. The tattoos help identify members of MS-13, because it is something that is required, as far as I know. These tattoos include the number 13 in regular writing, the number 13 in roman numerals, the word Mara, skulls, and daggers. Graffiti is basically MS, 13, MS-13, Mara, or again, the number 13 in roman numerals. The language that these members speak is also important. This includes their slang, and if they say the words Mara or Salvatrucha. The help that the media had on MS-13 was their recruiting. With the name of MS-13 getting out so quickly through media, it was easier for them to recruit. Many more people heard about them, and if they wished to join, they would go themselves in an attempt to find them, instead of members of the MS-13 having to find them. This included people who belonged to a gang before, have a love for violence, want to get rich fast, or people who simply loved their “cause”.
